The 5 Steps You Should Take to Ease Nerves Before an Interview

You are facing an interview that may lead to your next big career move, and for which you have been preparing for a long time.  As the interview time nears, anticipation may lead to experiencing nervousness that will not go away.  What should you do to help rein in your nerves for a successful interview? Here are some tips to help ease your nerves as you go to meet with a prospective employer.

  1. Trust your abilities.

You have worked hard to get where you are, and have acquired skills that make you uniquely qualified for the position you are seeking. Take the time to understand what you have to offer this prospective employer, and the skills, experience and knowledge that will make you an asset to this company.

  1. Do your homework.

Make sure you have thoroughly researched the company you are interviewing with, and that you have an understanding of what the position entails. You will be prepared to better articulate how your skills and experience make you the best candidate for the job.

  1. Remember this is not a pass/fail test.

You cannot be expected to know every expectation of this future employer, or who you may be up against in the interview process. The purpose of the interview is to see if you and the potential employer are a good fit, and there may be subjective reasons beyond your control that leads to another person being hired. You never know where an interview may lead, and how these contacts can benefit you in the future.  It may even lead to a job in another area of the company. Plus it will give insight and help better prepare you for your next interview.

  1. Prepare contingency plans.

You always want to be prepared to follow up with the potential employer with any additional information you think would enhance your chances of employment.  If there are key points you have overlooked in your discussions during the interview process, consider asking to add to your answer to clarify further why you are best suited for the position. Especially if there are areas of expertise which you were unable to bring up from the questions you were asked, you should look for an opportunity to discuss these qualifications further with the recruiter.

  1. Do not compare yourself to others.

You will ease your nerves considerably if you do not allow yourself to compare yourself to other candidates. Instead focus on your unique skills and how investing in your future will be of an asset to this company.
