Five Tips for Creating the Best LinkedIn Profile

When you are not actively seeking employment, it can be tempting to forget about your LinkedIn profile. Often we allow our LinkedIn profile to become outdated, and primarily just update new contacts as we network on the job.

It is important to do an overhaul of your LinkedIn profile on a regular basis to be ready for potential job opportunities.  Here are five tips to help you stand out and be noticed by recruiters and future employers.

  1. Take the time to have a more complete profile to draw the attention of recruiters.

Once a recruiter has found you, he or she will want to know about your skills, employment history, and what people think of you.  If your profile is not updated, it creates a poor impression to potential employers. You want to demonstrate that you are continuing to grow rather than stagnate in your current position. An out dated profile does not tell a potential employer about who you are now and what you could do for them if given the opportunity.

  1. Recruiters want a concise overview of your strengths, skills, experience & achievements.

Many LinkedIn profiles lack focus and do not give the potential employer what they need. Vast amounts of text can act as a barrier and end up losing your audience. Make sure to shorten your commentary on older positions you have held.

  1. Pay attention to details on your LinkedIn profile.

Make sure you proofread your profile every time you update your LinkedIn page. Recruiters will be turned off by incorrect spelling, punctuation or grammar. Autocorrect will not do the job you need to make sure everything is accurate.

  1. Don’t simply repeat what is already written on your CV.

Potential employers will want to get more background on you, and your LinkedIn page is a great tool to help you stand out. Be careful to check for any inconsistencies between your CV and LinkedIn page to avoid confusion. A great LinkedIn profile should engage the reader and give a much richer insight into accomplishments you have achieved.

  1. Recruiters will be looking for how well you engage with others in your profession.

At a certain point in your career, recruiters will be looking for more structured examples of your work, thinking and opinions in the articles you have written. If you have not done so already, you should also participate in discussions and comment on relevant articles in your field.
